Japan strongly supports compliance with the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal Award on the East Sea arbitration case, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Kashikawa Kazuhiko has twitted.<\/p>\n

He affirmed that ensuring a rules-based, free and open order in the sea is a legitimate concern of the international community, including Japan, as it has been a vital sea lane and needs to remain free and open.<\/p>\n

Regarding the recent incident around Scarborough Shoal, the diplomat reiterated Japan\u2019s position that any actions by force or coercion are utterly unacceptable.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0rules-based international order<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is more important than ever for every country, regardless of its size, he added.<\/p>\n

The Permanent Court of Arbitration\u2019s ruling, issued on July 12, 2016, rejects China\u2019s irrational claim over 80 percent of the\u00a0East Sea<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On February 2022, the Foreign Ministers of Australia, India and Japan and the Secretary of State of the US have committed to ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea (called the\u00a0East Sea<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in Vietnam) and the East China Sea, and deepening engagement with regional partners to protect their ability to develop offshore resources.<\/p>\n

Australian Foreign Minister (FM) Marise Payne, Indian FM Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Japanese FM Yoshimasa Hayashi and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, made the commitment in a joint statement issued after the fourth Quad Foreign Ministers\u2019 Meeting in Melbourne, Australia, on February 11.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The ministers recognise that international law, peace, and security in the maritime domain underpins the development and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe reiterate the importance of adherence to international law, particularly as reflected in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to meet challenges to the maritime rules-based order, including in the South and\u00a0East China Sea<\/strong><\/a>s. We are determined to deepen engagement with regional partners, including through capacity-building and technical assistance, to strengthen maritime domain awareness; protect their ability to develop offshore resources, consistent with UNCLOS;\u00a0ensure freedom of navigation and overflight; combat challenges, such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing; and promote the safety and security of sea lines of communication,\u201d they said in the joint statement.\/.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
