U.S., EU and Japan increase naval deployments in South China Sea

The United States, European Union, and Japan have increased their naval deployments in the South China Sea over the past year, aiming to send a clear message to Beijing about respecting territorial sovereignty and international law, according to diplomats. This strategic move comes in response to China’s extensive claims over the 3.6 million square kilometers of the South China Sea, a region rich in hydrocarbons and contested by multiple nations including Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei.

The increased presence of Western and Japanese naval forces in the region underscores a broader effort to counter China’s assertive maritime activities. The deployment of warships, including the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, has been noted as part of this effort to uphold international maritime norms.
